Our history

Kirby Road Surgery began with Dr Royall, who set up the practice on his own in 1976 after working at the Kingsbury Court Surgery from 1962. He initially worked in a small surgery that was behind Argos and opposite Asda Supermarket in Queensway, Dunstable.

After Dr Oliver O’Toole joined Dr Royall in 1980, the Practice began to grow with more patients joining the list. By the time Dr Nicholas Curt joined in 1984, the Practice had grown to such an extent that it was necessary to build a new surgery, in Kirby Road.

Dr Patricia Hulse joined the Practice in 1989 but left to raise her family in 2000, when Dr Sykes joined us from a Practice in Luton. When Dr Royall retired in 1992, Dr Paul Maddock joined us and worked until 2001 being replaced by Dr Marcel Schutte.

Dr Thomas joined in 2006 as an assistant and at one time did our Saturday morning surgeries but is now working at another surgery in the town and Dr Marcel Schutte has now taken over the role of alternate Saturdays. In 2008 Dr Corriette joined, having trained earlier with the Practice and in July 2011 Dr White joined our Practice.

In addition to the Doctors, there are 23 members of staff, one Nurse, two Healthcare Assistants, two Secretaries and various Receptionists with special responsibilities.  We also now have a Practice Management Team.

Dr Sykes and Dr Curt retired from Kirby Road Surgery in 2014.  Dr Curt helps out as a locum from time to time.

Our Practice continues to grow and hopefully evolve to meet the challenges required in a busy modern General Practice.
